He has had struggles to say the least, both physically and emotionally. We fortunately have a wonderful family support system. He has a wonderful wife Lacey, and two terrific children, Kamryn and Wyatt. Please help me honor my son and the many other soldiers all over the world!!
James Epps
My Veteran is my pops. He served in the Navy from 1961 through 1983 and retired as Chief Petty Officer. As my step-dad, growing up, he was just my dad, I didn\’t really see him as a Soldier. I rarely saw him in uniform, so I don\’t think it sunk in until I was an adult of how cool he actually is! Pops tells us stories of when he was active, of all the places he\’s gotten to travel to because of the Navy with the last place being Iraq. Once Pops retired, he worked for Bell Helicopter as a Mechanical Engineer on the Cobra Helicopter. His nickname at work was Snake Doctor because his coworkers joked that whatever was wrong with the Cobra, he could fix it! Pops was in his sixties and stationed with a Marine unit from New Orleans and went to Iraq twice as a civilian employee of Bell. My son was turning 5 and my dad took leave and flew home for 48 hours because, \”his grandson needed his grandpa to celebrate with him!\” Now-a-days, Pops is almost 80 and is a school crossing guard. He knows each and every one of his \”princes and princesses\” by name and knows when they aren\’t at school. For the past 10 years or so, Pops has been giving out bicentennial half dollars to families with babies, for their baby book. He explains to them that when the coin was minted, in 1976, the Internet wasn\’t a thing, Google didn\’t exist, Smart phones weren\’t a thing, Fast food was barely a thing, color tvs and personal computers were expensive, houses cost about $40 grand, cars cost less than $5 grand, and a coke was about $.50. He talks about how the babies parents were little, and how their families have grown and changed. He also talks about how for the tricentennial, in 2076, how those babies will be grandparents, how their families will grow, how we have no idea where technology will be, and how many changes will happen before then, both for good and bad. He wraps it all into an awesome story that has everyone captive and finishes with \”You know how I know it\’ll happen? Because it happened to me. I\’m just an old Boy Scout, a Grandpa, and a retired Navy Vet wanting to pass on a little love and history.\”
Jerry Avin Thomas Jr
I would like to honor my dad for sacrificing his time, blood, sweat, and tears just for us! Thank you for going to the Middle East kicking butt and coming back home safely! Love you! OORAH!!!
Charlie Staten
The facilities and operations director of our addiction treatment center is Charlie Staten who enlisted in the USAF age 17 in 1973. He had to have his parent\’s approval due to his age and says he was \”ready to serve then and ready to serve now if they need me!\” During his time in the Air Force he received awards and ribbons: Good Conduct; Outstanding Unit; Vietnam Era Veteran; Marksman; Pistol & Rifle. He served at air bases in Germany, the UK, Spain, Turkey and Pakistan in addition to various postings in the US. He was honorably discharged in 1979. Charlie keeps his love for the military alive by honoring other Veterans on all holidays and ensures our facility is appropriately flying the flag correctly and decorating the drive with hundreds of small flags on the 4th of July, Memorial Day and Veteran\’s Day. Always patriotic and a keeper and protector of our Flag, Charlie proudly honors all veterans, especially those in the Vietnam era who often have not received the attention and respect they deserve. My brother was a Veteran of service in the Vietnam War so this especially touches my heart. Thank you Charlie for your service to the United States and to fellow veterans. I am proud to work with you! Michelle Hook, MSN, RN

A special thank you to Terry Joe Lindsey for his service in the United States Marine Corp. You have served and viewed this world in ways that are unimaginable and unknowingly out of mind to so many people who are selfishly caught up in things that don\’t even matter in comparison. Sadly many are even oblivious of the sacrifices that have been made by others, for the freedoms they take for granted. Tony Yoakum
Tony flew Cobra Gunships in Vietnam and is a highly decorated Vet who with quick thinking hovered and defended several downed Hueys he was escorting to what was thought to be a safe LZ. Upon approaching the LZ Tony and the Hueys he was escorting started taking fire from VC hiding in tree lines. All the hueys were shot down but Tony maintained a hover and let loose everthing he had at his disposal to defend the downed hueys and while doing this Tony was wounded by an AK 47 bullet but still Tony kept defending the US and South Vietnam tropps below. Upon returning to base and still in his sweaty flight suit was ordered to fly another chopper to another base for another mission. When Tony arrived at his new destination he was approached by a high ranking officer and was awarded a purple heart and other medals. We met Tony back in 2013 while on vacation from Australia and we quickly became friends. While visting Tony at his home he showed us a guage from his Cobra that still has an AK 47 projectile stuck in it from the battle. It was presented to him after the Cobra was refitted. Decades after the battle Tony found out that several troopers that were on the hueys were searching for Tony for years to thank him for without his brave actions they would not be here today. All that were on the Hueys that day survived thanks to Tony.Tony still lives in Vernon with his wife Sherry. Tony has a small ranch where he teaches team roping. Both he and his wife are heavily involved with the Red River Museum where Sherry is the curator. It is an honor and privillage to know this humble generous man and we are very thankful for his service .Glenn and Penny Carrington Australia.

I did and he calls every year to remember my Brother Tommy on Memorial Day to have flowers placed on his grave, in 2021 that will be 40 years. He came to visit one year and shed a lot of light on Tommys last days. Keith is very Special to our family, and we Love him so much. Thank You Keith Hoffman

Randall Cox
My husband SSG Randall Cox is my hero. Not only is he with the MS Army National Guard and travels once a month for their training, (he’s deployed 3 times since 2004), he works for AT&T as a system tech plus is part of their National Disaster Recovery/First Net Response team. He is constantly training to ensure he and his men are prepared and come home safely. He’s a weapons specialist, communication specialist and trained as a field medic. Randy is a husband, father and a Papi who strives every day for excellence and to instill service over self. We love him and are grateful for the work he and others like him do everyday. Most people don’t think about the sacrifices our military makes not only physically but missed celebrations, holidays, and time. When they return from deployment they are often emotionally changed and transition+reintegration into family/life is hard. Veterans, first responders and service men & women need to be celebrated and supported every day.
Clifford Cochran
My grandfather, Clifford Cochran, was a WW2 veteran. When I was a kid, I thought he looked like Clark Gable that, when he smiled (which wasn\’t that often), looked like a poker player with a winning hand. When he wore his felt Stetson hat to town, I would have sworn that man was 10 ft tall and bullet proof and he walked with the confidence of a man that had a purpose. He was a cattle rancher in Oklahoma and never took a day off; he was the hardest-working man I\’ve ever met in my life. He passed away a year ago this past October and I think about him every day. To me, he truly exemplified the \”greatest generation.\”
Papaw
My papaw was a naval engineer mate, on USS Long beach, during Vietnam war. He always had a loving smile and always made everyone feel welcome. Your family misses you dearly. We can\’t wait til we can see you again up in heaven at the golden gates love you lots the Wandmaker family.

Jeramie
He\’s reserved, kind hearted, giving, hard working, dedicated, honest, loyal, funny, confident, faithful, loving, STRONG, maybe just a little handsome (huge smiley face here)…. This list goes on and on. He served 10 years in the Army. He fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has seen more pain and turmoil than I would ever want to imagine. Yet, he carries himself with so much love and kindness. He\’d do anything for anyone, no questions asked. He earned SEVERAL awards and commendations. Ones I never even knew about until we stumbled upon them when we moved recently. He dismissed them like they weren\’t a big deal. But I sat there reading them and couldn\’t hold back tears, learning of some of the things he\’d done. He doesn\’t see himself as a hero. He\’s a soldier…Its not something you do for the recognition, but for the sheer dedication to this country and the people in it. In his mind he\’s just another man in this world trying to make his way and provide for his family. But in my eyes he is a ROCK. I am proud to say he is my husband and my best friend…….I love and appreciate you Jeramie, more than words could ever explain.

Thank you most for being my dad. I love you.
