The teachers and students of DFW never cease to show how big their hearts can be when it comes to going the extra mile to help make others feel special and this Valentine’s Day, they did something very special to help our seniors in assisted living feel loved. Looking back at the past 2 years, it is crazy to think about how isolated that we have all been due to the Covid-19 pandemic and even more so for populations of people who are vulnerable to the virus.
This is the second year that we have worked to get handmade Valentine’s Day cards to seniors isolated in assisted living facilities. The extra special part about the campaign this year was that it was completely driven by the teachers in schools across DFW who started making them before we even asked, and it was a completely online campaign. For a majority of the classes, teachers said that it was an incredible opportunity to not just teach their kids about kindness, but show them a real world example of it:
“We so appreciate you doing this and giving us the opportunity to teach our kids about kindness and thinking of others and the older less fortunate during Valentine’s Day and spreading the love to them in this amazing way!!!’
– Mrs. Mendoza, Jack D. Johnson Elementary School, Southlake TX
With the amazing efforts of over 30 schools, student groups and other organizations, we were able to gather 10k handmade Valentine’s Day cards and get them sent out to almost 100 assisted living facilities across North Texas. The detail and creativity in these Valentine’s Day cards are incredible and make it nearly impossible to not put a smile on someone’s face.
The importance of these Valentine’s Day cards is extensive and do more than just show the community support and love for seniors who can feel a little forgotten and isolated, they also help with spurring the personal memories of the people who get them. For seniors struggling with memory issues, you never know when something is going to spark a memory or story about their own life and these silly cards can create priceless memories and stories from the people who are receiving them.
“My grandmother suffered with dementia and when something would spark a memory that seemed lost, it would get her on a roll talking about something from her life and those moments were precious to my family. I especially loved it when she would remember a funny story about my mom that we could all laugh at. Anything that we can do to create more of those moments is beyond worth it and I am grateful for all of the exceptional efforts of every person who helped us accomplish this goal. None of this would have been possible without the efforts of the people who listen to the morning show and that is what makes radio special.”
– Brian Moote Wake Up with the Wolf
The DFW morning show community is one that is very special and there never is a moment in which folks don’t step up in a selfless manner to help others in need. We can say it enough here on the Wolf, but we are all grateful for the hearts of our listeners and we could do nothing special without all of you!
Here are all of the wonderful schools, teachers and groups who helped this year.
