Rocky got robbed.

Didn’t really think much of it while watching the Academy Awards when Mark Rylance won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Rudolph Abel in Bridge Of Spies (instead of Golden Globe winner Sylvester Stallone).  I’d seen the movie (great movie!) and thought he did a believable job in it (although it didn’t seem as though he was in a lot of the movie; but, after all, we’re talking ‘supporting’ actor).

But I rented Creed the other day and have to say I was pleasantly surprised with Stalone.  Can’t say I was expecting much, but I’ve seen EVERY other movie in the Rocky series (I can quote ’em too; much to the dismay of my wife) and figured I’d make it a ‘lucky 7’ and watch Creed.

The movie may have been about Michael B. Jordan’s character (the illegitimate son of former heavyweight champ/pal of Rocky, Apollo Creed), but Stallone played a huge role in it, had lots of dialogue, and pulled it off well.  I half expected just a bunch of grunts and corny lines.  There were very few of these, although we did get a “Yo, Adrian” for old-times sake (when Rocky visits her and Paulie’s gravesite).

Maybe it’s because I was expecting so little, but I think the Golden Globe voters got it right this year in going with Stallone.
