NEW LAW BEGINS IN ONE WEEK — Next Thursday Sept 1st – Statewide Texting while driving ban goes into law. Individual cities in Texas have their own city-wide texting and driving bans but new law is Statewide.
House Bill 62, prohibits drivers on public roads from using a wireless communication device (i.e., a cell phone) to read, write, or send an electronic message while operating a motor vehicle. Penalty $25-99 for first-time offenders, and $100-200 for repeat offenders. A driver is allowed to use a hands-free device, that includes GPS. IF YOU HAVE TO TEXT – Pull over to a safe area, otherwise it can wait.
FACTS: 455 people were killed and more 3,000 seriously injured in Texas last year in vehicle crashes do to distracted driving, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
