Subway will close 500 locations this year. In 2017, 909 stores closed- that’s three times more than the year before. At present time, Subway has about 25,800 locations in the U.S., with an estimated 44,000 locations in 112 countries, Subway is the largest restaurant chain in the world, according to the company website. CEO Suzanne Greco said: “Store count isn’t everything, it’s about growing the business.”
More competition, newer chains, and more options have changed the sandwich marketplace. However, Subway plans to open over 1,000 stores outside of the U.S. focusing on locations in Britain, Germany, and Asia.
